Controlling the Stink

If you recall in my last blog I touched on the subject of natural deodorants and promised to delve deeper in a future blog. Well guess what? This blog is all about deodorants – surprise, surprise!

There’s a plethora of choices when it comes to controlling sweat and body odour. You will find deodorants, antiperspirants, and a combination of the both. Just as the name implies deodorants are for neutralizing foul odours, and antiperspirants block perspiration. “Aluminum-based compounds are the active ingredients in antiperspirants. They block the sweat glands to keep sweat from getting to the skin's surface.”[i] Antiperspirants that use aluminum have received a lot of press in recent years, some say they cause cancer, others say they are 100% safe. I’ve personally decided to lean on the side of caution and made the switch to plain old fashion natural deodorant.

I am a member of the Shop Local: Airdrie Facebook group. This might be an absolute coincidence but in the past few weeks I have seen several social media posts by people looking for recommendations on natural deodorants. The one shop that got a lot of attention was Green Butterfly Co https://greenbutterflyco.com/products/deodorant-stick, several group members raved about Green Butterfly’s Deodorant claiming it really worked, even through the most intense exercise routines. I personally have never tried this deodorant; however, I’ve had the pleasant opportunity to meet Alicia Bowman, the owner & operator of Green Butterfly Co, she is extremely knowledgeable when it comes to personal care products and ingredients that are safe and effective.

Alicia's deodorant comes in several different scents and currently has a retail price of $12.

Ingredients: Organic Coconut oil, Shea Butter, Apricot kernel oil, Bees Wax, Arrow Root Powder, White Kaolin Clay, Vitamin E Oil & Essential Oils

With all that being said I’ve tried the following deodorants and below is a summary of my findings:

Schmidt's - Bergamot & Lime

This deodorant has a fresh clean smell, was effective at keeping odors at bay, and it didn’t irritate my skin. I love the price point and the fact that I can easily place an order online through Amazon. The one thing that I didn’t like about this product was that even after a good underarm scrub in the shower, I still felt like I had a thin layer of deodorant on my pits, this film, for lack of better words, only disappeared after a few days once I discontinued use.

Retail Price: $6.77

Available online at: Amazon.ca

Ingredients: Arrowroot Powder, Baking Soda, Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Caprylic Triglyceride - Coconut oil derived, Candelilla Wax, Jojoba Seed Oil, Bergamot Peel Oil, Lime Oil, Tocopherol - vitamin E, Sunflower derived

Lamb’s Soapworks - Bergamot, Rosemary & Spearmint

I love this deodorant. It has a fresh clean smell, was effective at keeping odors at bay, and it didn’t irritate my skin. I found that this deodorant also worked very well at keeping my underarms nice and dry, almost as good as an antiperspirant. The only drawback for me was the price point; however, I don’t mind spending a little extra now and then to support local small businesses.

Green Beaver – Wild Rose

This product has a nice light smell, was very effective at keeping odors at bay, and didn’t irritate my skin; however, if I did work up a bit of a sweat I started to smell a little bit on the funky side, so I wouldn’t recommend it for someone who sweats a lot. I did like the price point and the fact that I could easily pick this item up at my local grocery store (Superstore).

All in all I am very happy with my switch to a natural deodorant and I believe that there is a perfect natural deodorant out there for everyone. There are so many products to choose from it’s just a matter of taking the time to find what works for you!
